Say hi to Scott!

My name is Scott Girard, and I am thrilled to introduce myself as the newest staff member at School Perceptions.

I graduated from UW-Madison with degrees in journalism and political science. Soon after, I began my career at a group of weekly newspapers in the Madison suburbs, where covering the Verona Area School District was among my assignments. I fell in love with the world of education.

After six years at those newspapers, I began covering the Madison Metropolitan School District for The Cap Times from 2019 to 2023. A graduate of MMSD myself, I was able to observe the District’s challenges and opportunities on a much larger scale than I had as a student. I also had the opportunity to cover a historic referendum and multiple superintendent searches.

I believe education is the most important thing we do as a society. It is filled with complex challenges and decisions that leaders must make to best meet the needs of students, families, and staff.

I first came across School Perceptions when the company completed surveys in Verona during my coverage there. I later reconnected with the organization about research published on their (now our!) blog and feel grateful to have this opportunity to contribute to what is already a great team.

In my role at School Perceptions, I plan to use my passion for education and experience in writing about schools to help districts make informed decisions based on data from their staff, their students, their families, and their taxpayers.

Whether it’s about what, if anything, to ask of their community through a referendum or gaining a better understanding of what they’re doing well and how they can improve, I believe there is a lot to learn from the data we gather.

Outside of work, I enjoy watching movies, television shows, and sports (Go Badgers, and we won’t talk about my other favorite teams…), playing board games, and spending time with my family and friends.

The School Perceptions Blog and Resource Center features the voices of our team members. This post was written by Scott Girard, Project Manager.
